This recipe was handed down from generations of camp cooks at Camp Tillicum. We modified it to test out Nothin' Funky's Just Ranch and found a winner!! You could probably use any homemade bread recipe, but this one makes a beautiful loaf!
Ingredients
- .25 cup butter
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup hot water
- 3 TBS honey
- 1 TBS yeast
- .5 tsp baking soda
- 2 tsp salt
- 2-3 tsp Nothin' Funky Just Ranch mix (more if you really like ranch-y bread!)
- 5 cups flour
- 1 egg for egg wash
- Additional flour for kneading
Instructions
- Melt butter and combine with all ingredients in a mixer with a paddle until dough clings together in one lump.
- Hand knead for 10 minutes, adding flour as needed to keep dough from sticking.
- Place dough into a greased bowl; cover and let rise until doubled.
- Divide into 2 loaves and shape into long rectangles. Cut dough length-wise into thirds, leaving ½ inch uncut on one end to hold the top of the dough together.
- Braid the three strands of dough, then bring the cut end around and join it to the uncut end to form a braided circle. Fold and tuck braid ends into the ½ inch uncut portion of the loaf.
- Place on lined sheet pan and allow it to rise until doubled again. Use egg wash to cover the loaf and sprinkle with Nothin' Funky Just Ranch mix before baking.
- Bake at 350 for 25 minutes or until center reaches 205 degrees.
- Variation: form loaves into round shape. Egg wash the top of the dough, and add anything that you would like on the top (sesame seeds, sunflower, walnuts, poppy seeds).
